There have been 9 maternal deaths in Guyana this year. The largest maternal wards are at New Amsterdam Hospital and Georgetown Public Hospital.
Anaemia was noted to affect half of all pregnant women before 2005 in Guyana. The maternity facilities at New Amsterdam Hospital as well as GPHC are equipped to replenish the blood volume of anaemic patients.
Yet some of the leading causes of maternal deaths in Guyana, in these two major maternal wards in the country, (which also represent the majority of maternal deaths recorded in Guyana) include hemorrhages and hypertensive diseases of pregnancy. Other causes of death being puerperal sepsis and also malaria in a few instances.
