I’m currently reading a book by Sr Mary Noel Menezes, (1992), The Portuguese of Guyana: A Study in Culture and Conflict. According to the book, an 1841 report of the Stipendiary Magistrates indicates that 7% of the Portuguese population in Guyana, had perished by that year. The deaths were noted to be caused by yellow fever and dysentry and a few had died apparently of nostalgia !

It is a very interesting read and an insight into the Portuguese immigration to Guyana. The author outlines the Portuguese Madeiran heritage to their subsequent migration to British Guinea .

Found the book at ‘Creations’ on Water Street.
