The Umana Yana was erected in 1972 for the Non-Aligned Foreign Ministers Conference in Guyana. It is a 55 feet conical hut called a Benab, made out of tatched alibanna and manicole palm leaves. The wallaba posts are tied together with mukru and nibbi vines. No nails have been used in this structure.
The wai wai Ameriandians were involved in the making of this structure.
Located close to the Pegasus hotel, it is now used as a convention centre.
Umana Yana is the wai wai term for ‘meeting place of the people’.
