it is a 1,851 metres long pontoon bridge, south of Georgetown, commissioned on the 2nd of July, 1978. There is a raised section for small vessels to pass and a retractor span for larger vessels. The toll is a hundred dollars (Guyana dollars) and is only collected one way.

The Demerara river, in Eastern Guyana, rises in the Central Rainforests and flows Northwards for 346km until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean.

There’s a considerable amount of silt being carried by the river which imparts the water a dark brown hue. The currents are powerful and retain the colour as the river flows into the ocean.

Traffic is stalled for passage of larger vehicles, but the times are always announced on the radio channels.
